Shut Up and Push!

I met Dr. Gerstberger when he started practicing in Lakin Ks.  He was my Dr. for my first born son, over 16 years ago.  Since this was my first child, and had never been through labor before, I didn't really know what I was doing when it came time to "push".  I thought I was pushing, I knew it hurt... but I apparently was not doing a good enough job.  Dr Gerstberger stands up, looks at me sternly, and YELLED at me "SHUT UP AND PUSH!" (who knew that grunts and crying wasn't pushing?! lol)  He shocked me into pushing, and we had a good laugh afterwards.  I couldn't be angry at the man, especially when he stood there cradling my son, smiling, and he looks at me and says "In all my deliveries, this boy is the first child I've ever got to deliver ON his exact due date, I'll never forget this".  And he didn't.  After he moved his practice to Ulysses I didn't get to see him as much, but when I needed him, he was always there, willing to see "my shannon".

I started having some major issues, and after specialist and specialist in Wichita and Kansas City, I finally went to him and said "No one knows what's going on... I just want fixed! Help me...." and he did.  He never gave up, he ran test after test, asked question after question.  Months later, after a ton of research and a lot of conversations he figured out what was basically crippling me.  My body was shutting down, attacking itself.  A diagnoses and treatment, and he saved my life when everyone else gave up.

There will never be another "Dr. G", and I know that he has helped and made a difference in every patient he has ever had.  He will truly be missed.
