Obituary for Willard James "Bill" Harmon

Garden City- Willard James “Bill” Harmon, 71 died on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at his home. He was born on June 11,1951 at Holyoke, Colorado the son of Everette & Edna (Wolcott) Harmon.

Bill was born shortly after his paternal Great-Grandfather William Jasper “Bill” Harmon had died and all the family members referred to the new baby as Little Bill and the nickname stuck. He spent the first fourteen years of his life on a small cattle ranch that his family had homesteaded in the Northeast corner of Yuma County, Colorado. He attended at one room school that had a hand water pump and outdoor toilet. The family ranch sold in 1965 and the family moved into Holyoke where Bill graduated high school in. 1969.

Bill started on a custom wheat harvesting crew when he was fifteen, they started in Seymour, Texas and finished in Havre, Montana. Bill moved to Garden City and with his business partner, Gordon Miller, started Harmon and Miller Inc in 1972. They started out in the custom wheat harvesting business and expanded into harvesting corn silage, farming and even running a college bar called Uncle Johnnies in Garden City where Martina McBride was a member of one of the bands. They ventured into the livestock business by operating a starter lot to wean calves for feedyards. Because of this Bill took a job with Moorman Manufacturing where he became the top salesman in the nation for livestock feed. After that he started Bill Harmon Farms where he built a custom silage packing business that had large cattle feedyard and dairy customers in five states. He enjoyed traveling, meeting people, dining at great steak houses and Bar-B-Que joints.
