Obituary for Roger Allen Jarmer

Roger Allen Jarmer, age 71, died at home in Garden City, Kansas, surrounded by family, on March 12, 2022.

Born October 20, 1950 to Elizabeth (Baldwin) and Cyril Jarmer, Roger farmed his entire life. He grew up on the family dairy farm and began driving tractor at eight years old. He was involved in 4-H and FFA. Roger graduated from Garden City High School and Garden City Community College. Upon graduation he married Deborah Stephens on August 21, 1971. Together they attended Kansas State University where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Agriculture Education.

Roger returned to work on the family dairy farm and sold real estate, then opened Jarmer Brothers Appliance Store in 1977 with his brother, Gary, later changing the name to Jarmer’s Warehouse Showroom. He obtained his pilot’s license and traveled for business and family vacations. After closing the doors to his retail business, he taught high school science until he retired in 2015, but continued to manage his small alfalfa farm operation.

As an adult, he enjoyed helping his children with their 4-H projects including showing livestock at the county and state fairs. Family state fair trips often involved visits to the grandstands for country music concerts. Later in his life, Roger enjoyed traveling to eastern Kansas to visit children and grandchildren, which frequently involved large tailgate celebrations before cheering on the Wildcats. Lunch with friends and his four cats were also very special to him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Kurt, Gary, and Cynthia Jarmer. He is also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Douglas Stephens, son-in-law, Russell Clark, mother-in-law, Neta (Royer) Stephens and two grandchildren, Claire and Samuel Crowe.

He is survived by his spouse of 50 years, Deb, and their six children, Lindsay Clark, Joey Jarmer (Jaime), Brett Jarmer, Katie Crowe (Nathan), Kelli Quintero (Boris) and Matthew Jarmer (Ashley) and nine grandchildren, Tristan Clark, Ryan Jarmer, Seth Jarmer, William Jarmer, Clayton Jarmer, Abigail Jarmer, Lauren Jarmer, Alexander Crowe, and Barrett Crowe; father-in-law, William Stephens, sisters-in-law Stephanie Martinek (Ken), Barbara Stephens, Julie Hensley (Jeff), Sherry Jarmer, and eight nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church on Wednesday, March 16, at 10:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the GCCC Endowment Association Nursing Scholarship Fund or St. Catherine’s Hospice in care of Garnand’s Funeral Home, 412 N. 7th Street, Garden City, KS 67846.
