Obituary for Robert "Bob" Krug
Retired educator and coach Robert “Bob” Krug left this earth and went to his heavenly home on March 24, 2022, at the age of 74, surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest. Bob was born on November 8, 1947 in Garden City, Kansas to Emil Sr. and Eva Krug. Bob was the youngest of three children. Bob enjoyed sports, including basketball, baseball and tennis while growing up. Graduating from Garden City High School in southwest Kansas in 1965, Bob later completed his degree from Emporia State University before returning to Garden City to begin a career in education. Bob taught for 34 years in Garden City before completing his career with seven more years in Holcomb. The passion in Bob’s work came from his love for teaching, whether in the classroom or on the tennis court. Bob coached boys and girls tennis for 26 years. Bob took great delight in coaching and teaching, and as a result began a very successful summer tennis program that he ran for 34 years. He made many meaningful memories for himself and those he taught and coached. In May 2021, Bob and Jane returned to Garden City after snowbird season, sold their house and began a transition to permanent residency at their home in Largo, Florida.
As an adult Bob enjoyed playing tennis, racquetball, and golf. Bob loved watching University of Kansas Jayhawk basketball, he loved guessing games, the spirit of sport and ultimately the joy that healthy competition provides self and others. Service was an important part of Bob’s life. As a member of the First United Methodist Church in Garden City, Bob served in many different capacities. He went to Honduras to help with water projects seven times, and along with his wife Jane, worked with a Volunteers in Mission team for the United Methodist Church from 2012-2015, as well as other local service projects over the years. He was also a proud U.S. Veteran. Bob owned and operated Krug’s Sport Shop from the basement of their home where he provided unique, customized service. Bob was known by his family and the tennis community for having customer visits during all hours of the day, as this was a place for all skill levels to feel welcomed.
Bob is remembered by his family and many others with his stories, laughter, and crazy sayings like “Humma Humma” and “Hello Wall.” He drove many, many miles transporting his tennis teams to tournaments, staying awake eating sunflower seeds or talking with the player that chose the front seat.
Bob was inducted into the Garden City High School Athletics Hall of Fame in December 2021 and was humbled and appreciative of that honor and celebration. Bob is lovingly remembered by many he coached, and his legacy will live on.
Bob is survived by his wife Jane, married on July 22, 1972. This July they were planning to celebrate their 50th Anniversary with their family in Asheville, North Carolina. Bob is also survived by their three children Chad, Amanda, and Sarah; daughter-in-law Kate and sons-in-law Ryan and Aaron; grandchildren Cole, Addy, Ty, Nora, Asher, and Corbin; sister Beverley and brother Emil Jr. and his wife Deandra. He is also survived by sister-in-law Doris Rauhut and brother-in-law Ron Matteson and his wife Brenda.
Too humble to admit, Bob had a lot of courage and brought so much joy into the world. Bob’s family and friends will celebrate his courage, the legacy of his joy and his life with a Celebration of Life service at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City. The service may also be viewed on Facebook Live on the Garnand Funeral Home Facebook page. A reception will follow at Southwind Golf and Dining from 2:30-4:30pm. A scholarship is being established in memory of Bob. In lieu of flowers, contributions for the Bob Krug Memorial Scholarship may be sent to Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. 7th St., Garden City, Kansas 67846.
