Obituary for Raymond R. "Mike" Mai

Raymond R. “Mike” Mai, 89, died Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at the Kansas Veterans Soldiers Home in Ft. Dodge, Kansas. He was born May 22, 1931 in Garden City, Kansas the son of Adam & Amelia Elizabeth (Killian) Mai.

Raymond and his family lived in Lenora, Kansas for a short time from 1935 to 1936. They returned to back to the Garden City area where Raymond attended Garden City schools and graduated from Garden City High School in 1949. He served in the United States Navy from February of 1951 to February of 1955. He served three tours of duty in Japan, Korea, & China. After the service, Raymond returned to the Garden City area where he farmed in Northern Finney County. On January 23, 1966, he married W. Ellen Hall in Kansas City, Kansas. They moved into Garden City in 1968. Raymond then worked for three years in the millwright business installing conveyors in elevators. He then became a self-employed welder.

Raymond is a member of St. James Lutheran Church of Garden City, the American Legion, and the Garden City Sunrisers Kiwanis. He enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include a son Michael Mai of Garden City; a grandson Zyon Reynoso of Salina, Kansas; and three great-grandchildren. Raymond is preceded in death by his wife Ellen who died on August 4, 2009. He is also preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers Hubert, Wilbert (PeeWee), Don, and Robert.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 22, 2021 at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Pastor Michael Hageman officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in garden City with military graveside rites conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard and the American Legion District #8 Honor Guard. Friends may call from Noon to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family requests memorials given to the W. Ellen Mai Nursing Scholarship Fund at Garden City Community College in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
