Obituary for Ray Cornelson
Ray Cornelson, 93, died Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. He was born October 27, 1927 in Fowler, Kansas the son of J.K. & Agnes (Schlitling) Cornelson.
Ray grew up in Fowler, Kansas where he attended schools and graduated from high school in 1946. On May 12, 1958, he married Doris Armstrong in Lincoln, Nebraska. They lived in Dodge City and Wichita before moving to Garden City in 1967. Ray began his working career in building grain elevators. He later became a truck driver. While working as a truck driver, Ray also became the owner and operator of Cornelson Big Valley Rides. After moving to Garden City, Ray also purchased and became owner and operator of Little America which was located at Finnup Park. He was a member Lifetime member of the Good Sam RV Club and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He enjoyed woodworking, building wood puzzles, and telling jokes.
Survivors include his wife Doris Cornelson of the home; three children Cyndi Proffitt & spouse Ron of Garden City, Doug Cornelson & spouse Shari of Munden, Kansas, and Ramona “Rocky” Cornelson & spouse Colene Marshall of Wichita, Kansas; two daughters-in-law Elaine Childers of Garden City, Kansas and Pam Childers of Centerton, Arkansas; a sister Ruth Young of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren. Ray is preceded in death by his parents; two sons Stuart Childers and Ken Childers; two grandsons Bradley Ray Proffitt and Jacob Cornelson; a brother Bill Cornelson; and a sister Edna Smith.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at Garden Valley Church in Garden City with Pastor Steve Ensz and Rev. Shawn Fletcher officiating. Services may also be viewed on Facebook Live on the Garnand Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Garden City. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday and from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family suggests memorials given to the Donor’s Choice in care of the funeral home.
