Obituary for Ralph D. Lane

Ralph D. Lane, 77, died Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at his home in Ulysses, Kansas. He was born June 2, 1945, in La Junta, Colorado, the son of Ralph Henry & Ruby Irene (Smith) Lane and was raised by his grandparents Frank & Gladys Smith.

Ralph grew up as a child in La Junta and Pueblo, Colorado where he attended schools. At the age of 13, he started working in various restaurants and at 17 began working in the wheat harvest fields. After moving to Ulysses, Kansas, Ralph worked at Weber Supply – Water Well Repair, Ulysses Irrigation & Pipe, and Sullivan Elevator. In 1973, he began working at Columbian Carbon and in 1976 worked at Dowell Well. In 1987, he moved to Lake Texoma where he owned and operated a bate and tackle shop. In 1989, Ralph moved to Garden City where he owned and operated Poor Boys Auto until he retirement. He moved back to Ulysses 4 years ago and has lived in Ulysses since.

Ralph helped to start and served as president of the Sunny 7CB Club. He also served on the board that started the search and rescue in Ulysses and served as president and vice-president in getting the land to build the men’s and women’s softball fields in Ulysses. He loved driving his stock car, but his main passion was fishing. Ralph also enjoyed camping with family and friends and enjoyed Sunday mornings to attend Sunday Worship where his grandchildren would lead music.

Ralph first married Sandy Musgrove on November 8, 1963, in Ulysses, Kansas. He later married Yevette Epperson Bahntge on October 1, 1989, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Yevette died on October 10, 2022. He is also preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents; a grandson Justin Lane; and four siblings Larry, Rocky, Pat, & Diane.

Survivors include his children Chuck & Dana Lane of Lakin, Kansas, Tammy K. Lane-Reese of Ulysses, Kansas, and Tommy Lane of Ulysses, Kansas; his stepchildren Nick Bahntge of Topeka, Kansas, Tammy & Mike Arbogast of Lakin, Kansas, Jeffery & Charlotte Bahntge of Kendall, Kansas, & Shannon Bahntge of Sublette, Kansas; six siblings Beverly, Anita, Connie, Bill, Kenny, & Cheryl; 23 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 2 great great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 24, 2023, at the Lakin Assembly of God in Lakin, Kansas with Pastor Robert Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at the Lakin Cemetery. Friends may call from Noon to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin, Kansas.
