Obituary for Michael Vern Collins

Michael Vern Collins, 66, died July 7, 2022 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. He was born March 24, 1956 in Dodge City, Kansas the son of John E. and Ladine L. (Schweitzer) Collins.

Mike’s family moved to the Garden City area where he attended the local schools. He worked at various places over the years such as Sunflower Electric, Midwest Crane, and Panhandle Steel. For more than 20 years he was a crane operator for PAR Electric until his retirement.

Mike enjoyed hot rods, fishing, the Kansas City Chiefs, and Kansas Jayhawks. He had a unique sense of humor; sometimes you couldn’t tell if he was being serious or not. Although he was a jokester it was usually an indication if he was giving you a hard time that meant he liked you. Mike’s job could be demanding at times pulling him away to help after natural disasters or storms to restore power and clean up damage. His friends and family were very important to him and he enjoyed time spent together.

He is survived by his Wife- Ruthie Rohrbough of Holcomb, Kansas, Son- Jackson (Libby) Collins of Holcomb, Kansas, Grandchildren- Kyol, Caleb, Craig, and Keith, and Sisters- Marty (Daryl) Dinkel, Ginny (Dale) Patterson, and Kelly (Joe) Hoffman.

Mike was preceded in death by his Parents, Brother- John R. Collins, and Sister- Nancy J. Norton.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday July 16, 2022 at the Church of the Brethren in Garden City, Kansas with a reception to follow at 2:00 p.m. at Time Out. Memorial Contributions are suggested to the Church of the Brethren in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
