Obituary for Mathew McDonald

Mathew Bryan McDonald, 35, died Tuesday June 20, 2023 at his home in Garden City, Kansas. He was born April 6, 1988 in Winfield, Kansas; the son of Michael McDonald and Diana (Butler) Russell.

Growing up Mat went to school in both garden City and Eureka, Kansas. He graduated from Eureka high School in 2006. He loved to fish and especially at the lake.

He excelled in all sports and loved playing football, basketball, track, and baseball. He was a hardcore KC Chiefs fan and knew every aspect of their organization. He had a passion for fitness and nutrition and was a personal trainer for years.

Mat accepted Christ as his savior in his early teens at church camp and attended Jefferson St. Baptist Church. His faith remained unshakeable all of his life.

He always showed compassion to others and always told his family “I love you”. He had an infectious laugh and smile that brightened your day.

Survived by his Son Mattix Bruner of Wichita, Father Mike McDonald and Stepmom Melita of Grove, Oklahoma, Mother Diana Butler Russell of Garden City, Sister Alison Mosley and her husband Tanner of Chetopa, Kansas, Sister Shasin Hedges and her husband Ben, Nephews Gabe Valentine, Luke Hedges, Nieces Olivia Valentine, Mia Hedges, and Madilynn Mosley. Uncles, Aunts, and Cousins, Grandparents Art & Sue McDonald of Eureka, Kansas.

Mat is preceded in death by his sister Kayla McDonald, Grandparents Rick Butler and Lavonna (Shorty) Rose.
