Obituary for Martha Mae Miller

Martha Mae Miller, 104, died Saturday, February 18, 2023, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born March 17, 1918, in Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of Frank & Hazel (Withers) Betts.

Martha was a lifetime resident of Garden City where she attended schools and graduated from Garden City High School in 1937. She married Joe W. Miller on August 22, 1937. Joe passed away on March 11, 1976.

Martha worked at Woolworth’s for three and a half years, then quit for a while. She later went back and worked for thirty eight years until the store closed in 1989. Martha was a charter member of the Eagles lodge, and a lifetime member of the First Christian Church in Garden City where she was assistant secretary for many years. After her retirement from Woolworth’s, Martha enjoyed going to Dillons for coffee every Wednesday. She also enjoyed shopping, working in the yard, going to garage sales, enjoying her collection of ceramic cats, decorating for the various holidays, and going to church.

Survivors include her son Steve Miller of Garden City, Kansas; a sister Kelly Moore of Ft. Worth, Texas; three brothers Daryl Betts of Idaho Springs, Colorado, Ronnie Betts of Medford, Oregon, & Monty Betts of Medford, Oregon; two grandchildren Sunny Miller and Sage Miller; and four great-grandchildren Meghan Damko, Morgan Swazuk, Dylan Swazuk, & Averik Miller. She is preceded in death by her husband Joe W. Miller; her parents; a brother Jack Betts; and six sisters Hazel Cecil, Midge Miller, Jerry Earnest, Kathryn Kahrs, Carol Johnson, & Stella Whitlock.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 27, 2023, at the First Christian Church in Garden City, Kansas. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Visitation will be held at the church prior to the service. The family suggests memorials given to the First Christian Church in care of the funeral home.
