Obituary for LaVerna Deemer
LaVerna Deemer, 97, died Friday, May 28, 2021 at her home in Garden City, Kansas. She was born September 30, 1923 in Clarion, Pennsylvania the daughter of James Burton & Eleanor (Morrison) Campbell.
LaVerna grew up in Clarion, Pennsylvania where she graduated from high school. She then attended 2 years at Roberts Wesleyan College in Chili, New York. LaVerna then attended and earned a BA degree from Seattle Pacific College in Seattle, Washington. She worked most of her life as a homemaker, a Missionary, and during WWII she worked for General Motors while living in Seattle, Washington. In 1948, LaVerna began her work as a Missionary in South Africa. On June 7, 1952, she married David Kenneth Madgwick in South Africa. David later died on February 2, 1985. LaVerna continued her Mission work in South Africa until 1993 when she moved back to the United States. She lived in McMinnville, Tennessee, Gardner, Kansas and later moved to Garden City in October of 2013. In 1999, she married Alfred Deemer in Garden City. Alfred died in 2006. LaVerna enjoyed reading, knitting, and corresponding with friends throughout the world.
Survivors include a son Kenneth Madgwick of Garden City, Kansas; two daughters Sandra Meyer of Texarkana, Arkansas and Sheila Paterson of Kansas City, Kansas; a brother Willis Campbell of Olathe, Kansas; ten Grandchildren; and fifteen Great-Grandchildren. LaVerna is preceded in death by her two husbands; her parents; two brothers Harold Campbell and Everett Campbell; and a sister Alberta Larson.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 4, 2021 at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Kenneth Madgwick officiating. The service may also be viewed on Facebook Live on the Garnand Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials given to CMML (Christian Missions in Many Lands, Inc.) in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
