John R. Chavez
November 8, 1944-February 2, 2023
John Rocha Chavez, 78, of Cameron, Texas, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 2, 2023, In Garden City, Kansas.
A resident of Garden City, Kansas since September 1980, John was born on November 8, 1944, to Juan Emiliano Peralta Chavez and Faustina Rocha Carrillo in Cameron, Texas.
John was a spiritual man, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. You could always count on him to make you smile with a silly joke or funny story. He enjoyed mowing the lawn on his trusty riding mower, grilling out, fishing at Scott Lake, tending to his garden, watching his favorite Western: “Gunsmoke” and spending time with his beloved family. He was a problem solver, a man of God, a genuine soul, a quiet confidant, and a peacekeeper.
From a young age, John was a hard worker. He provided years of service as a Gin Operator for Hale Center Coop, in Hale Center, Texas. He later worked in Special Projects at Supreme, HeyCo Industries and IBP in Garden City and Holcomb, Kansas. As he would say, John was a “Jack of all Trades”. We will remember him as a sweet, ornery man of many talents and gifts, who could do and fix anything.
On December 31, 1968, John married Consuelo Riojas of Hale Center, Texas. They were almost inseparable for over 60 years; she survives.
John is also survived by his children: Donna Chavez of Garden City, Kansas; Peggy Chavez of Garden City, Kansas; Jerry R. Chavez of Prairie Village, Kansas; Crystal Perez of Garden City, Kansas; Sara Christmann of Wichita, Kansas; Lucas Chavez of Wichita, Kansas; Felix Castaneda of Garden City, Kansas; Xavier Castaneda of Garden City, Kansas; his siblings: Jose Chavez, Juana Chavez Donoso, Maria Elena Chavez Fest, Herminia “Minnie” Carrillo Vasquez, Evangelina “Eva” Chavez Kuhns, Elena “Helen” Carrillo Garcia, Teresa Chavez Sidon, Paula Carrillo Burrows, Consuelo ”Sandy” Senaida Carrillo Ruiz, Elva Carrillo Ramirez and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren.
