George grew up on the family farm in Finney County where he learned farming alongside his siblings at a young age. He attended Pierceville and St Mary elementary schools and graduated from Garden City High School in 1965 and later Garden City Community College. He served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1969 in Vietnam. He returned to Finney County and married the love of his life in 1971.
