Obituary for Gary Baier

Gary Baier, 75, died Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin, Kansas. He was born December 15, 1946, in Garden City, Kansas the son of Antone & Eleanor (Prevo) Baier.

Gary grew up in the Deerfield and Holcomb area. After graduating from Holcomb High School in 1965, Gary served in the United States Marine Corp during the Vietnam War, from January 11, 1966 to January 10, 1968. During his time in the service, Gary received 2 Purple Hearts. On July 12, 1969, he married Sherry Lee Stuart in Garden City, Kansas. They lived in Garden City until 1994, when they moved to Holcomb. A farmer, Gary has also worked as owner and operator of Gary’s Glass Service since 1985.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City; 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus; the American Legion; and a lifetime member of the VFW.

Survivors include his wife Sherry Baier of the home; three children Michelle Baier (Mandy Fritz) of Holcomb, Kansas, Roxanne Baier of Garden City, Kansas; and Bryan Baier of Holcomb, Kansas; three brothers Robert Baier of Garden City, Kansas, John Baier of Garden City, Kansas, Bill Baier of Holcomb, Kansas; a sister Dorothy Fairchild of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; three grandchildren Ashley Baier of Scottsdale, Arizona, Blanca Baier of Holcomb, Kansas, and Christian Baier of Holcomb, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews. Gary is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers Albert Baier, Tony Baier, Richard Baier, & his twin brother Thomas Baier; and three sisters Anita Savolt, Carolyn Benton, & Mary Ann Metts.

A Vigil service and Rosary will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, 2022, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 28, 2022, also at St. Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Jacob Schneider as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family suggests memorials given to the Hereditary Neurological Disease Centre in care of the funeral home.
