G. Irene Unruh, 90, died Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at her home in Garden City, Kansas. She was born January 14, 1931 in the Lexington Community of Clark County, Kansas. She was the daughter of John Virgil & Jennie May (Vallentine) Crane.
Irene grew up in the Lexington Community where she attended schools. She attended high school in Ashland, Kansas where she graduated in 1950. The family moved into Ashland when she was a senior in high school. Irene then attended nursing school at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City where she has lived since. Irene worked as a registered nurse at St. Catherine Hospital for 47 years, retiring in 1996. She worked in the baby ward and hospital leadership. In 1953, she married David Unruh in Ashland, Kansas. Irene also was a co-owner and operator of the Antique Needle in Garden City. She was a member of Turning Point Church of the Nazarene and the Sandhill Art Association. Irene loved arts and crafts, painting, embroidery, photography, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren. She also had a very strong faith and loved life.
Survivors include four children Roger Unruh and spouse Sara of Garden City, Kansas, Nancy Smith & Spouse Chuck of Madison, Kansas, Judy Unruh & spouse Vicki Gebhart of Hutchinson, Kansas, and Tom Unruh of Garden City, Kansas; a son-in-law Dennis Scott of Independence, Kansas; ten Grandchildren; and twenty six Great-Grandchidlren. Irene is preceded in death by her parents; a daughter Linda Scott; a brother Guy Crane; two sisters Ellen McPhail and Eula Mae Crane; and a grandson Dave Unruh.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 19, 2021 at Turning Point Church of the Nazarene in Garden City with Rev. Nathan Haeck officiating. A private family interment will take place at a later date. There will be no calling hours. The family suggests memorials given to Turning Point Church of the Nazarene in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
