Obituary for Carl L. Varner Jr.

Carl L. Varner, Jr., 83, died Monday, February 28, 2022, at The Ranch House in Garden City, Kansas. He was born May 31, 1938, in King Center, Colorado the son of Carl L. Varner, Sr. and Elsie Marie (Baker) Varner.

Carl grew up with his family living in various places throughout southeast Colorado. On July 28, 1957, he married Yvonne Pearl Byrd in Rocky Ford, Colorado. They moved to Garden City in 1968 and have lived in Garden City since. Carl worked in various jobs throughout his life including Farmland Industries, and the Santa Fe Railroad. He then became an owner and operator of Carl Varner Fencing and later went on to work as a truck driver for the Garden City Cooperative. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Garden City and he loved to spend his time fishing, whittling, and gardening.

Survivors include 3 daughters Linda Varner of Holcomb, Kansas, Lori & husband Dwane Ingalls of Whiteland, Indiana, and Penny Harland of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; 2 sisters Charlene Manweiler of Pueblo, Colorado and Nancy & husband Mike Sechrist of Montrose, Colorado; 2 brothers Bill & wife Audrey Varner of LaJunta, Colorado and Phillip Varner of Crescent, Oklahoma; 4 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.

Carl is preceded in death by his wife Yvonne who died on May 1, 1995. He is also preceded in death by his parents; a son Gordon Varner; a sister Edna Stockton; 3 brothers Eugene Varner, James Varner, and Andrew Varner; and a son-in-law Bob Harland.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2022, at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City with Dwane Ingalls officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials given to the Carl Varner Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home.
