Obituary for Aurora Alcala

Aurora Alcala, 78, of Ulysses, Kansas, passed away peacefully Friday, May 19, 2023, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born October 2, 1944, in Mission, Texas, the daughter of Manuel and Juanita Coronado Vela.

Aurora grew up mostly in Munday Texas, but she also lived in Amarillo and various other places for seasonal work growing up. She married Daniel C. Alcala on December 4, 1975, and moved to Ulysses in 1976.

Aurora enjoyed working outside in her garden, planting flowers and tending to the yard. She also enjoyed sewing, making quilts, embroidery, cooking, and watching television. Her favorite programs to watch were home improvement, cooking and game shows. One of her greatest joys was cooking and feeding her family. She loved coming up with new recipes. She was a member of Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

Aurora is survived by her husband, Daniel of their home; son Michael Alcala of CaƱon City, Colorado; daughter Donna Alcala of Ulysses; stepson Daniel Jr. Alcala and wife LeAnn of Pensacola, Florida; stepdaughters, Cathy Landin and husband Michael of San Antonio, Texas, and Rita Gutierrez of Denver, Colorado; sisters, Linda Dudley and husband Darwin, Marie Fajardo and husband Gilbert, Dora Gil and husband Bobby, Amelia Veliz and husband Andy, Rosa Lopez and husband Pete, all of Amarillo, Texas, Lupe Ledesma and husband John and Minnie Ramirez, both of Wichita Falls, Texas, Oralia Flores and husband Orlando of Burkburnett, Texas, Olivia Cabrera of Baytown, Texas, brother John and wife Vicki of Waco, Texas; eight grandchildren, Mia, Ava, Dereck, Douglas, Caleb, Sonny, Shawn and Scott; and five great-grandchildren.

Aurora is preceded in death by her parents, Manuel and Juanita Vela; brothers, Ruben Vela, and Jesse Vela; sister, Joanie Jaramillo; and granddaughter, Julie Alcala.

Rosary will be Thursday, May 25, 2023, at 7:00 PM and Funeral Mass will be Friday, May 26, 2023, at 10:00 AM both at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses, Kansas, with Reverend Charles Seiwert officiating. Interment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday, May 25, 2023, from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
