Obituary for Abundio "Muni" Munoz

Garden City- Abundio “Muni” Munoz, 72, died on Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born on June 18, 1950 at Garden City the son of Luz & Caroline (Mora) Munoz. He married Jessie Jimenez on November 27, 1976. They divorced and he married Bonnie Schlegel. Muni and Jessie were reunited in marriage on May 17, 1997 in Garden City.

Muni was a lifelong Garden City resident. He graduated from Garden City High School in 1968 and Garden City Community College with his degree in Police Science. He worked as a teenager at Stoner Market then at Oswalt Manufacturing. In 1981 he started a lifelong career with the Finney County Sheriff Department as a jailer, patrol deputy and retired as a warrants deputy. He began working under Sheriff Grover Craig at the old courthouse, trained former Sheriff Kevin Bascue and worked under him until retirement. He was very involved with St Dominic Catholic Church serving in the Men’s Group, previously St. Dominic Choir, Communion minister and homebound communion deliverer, committees and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus member. He also served on the boards of various committees, which include Relay for Life, Garden City Fiesta Committee among others. He enjoyed walking, visiting with friends and family and dancing with Jessie. He always had a special dog with Champ being his last one and enjoyed taking him on his rides, watching the KU Jayhawks and Denver Broncos.

He is survived by his Wife- Jessie Munoz, 4 Children - Aurelia Marie Munoz (Jason Ramos) of Garden City, Jared (Jessica) Munoz of Lawrence, Nathan (Keisha) Munoz of Garden City and Erik Munoz of Garden City, 2 Brothers- Jorge Munoz (Lena) and Abelardo (Peggy) Munoz both of Garden City and 6 Grandchildren- Christian Orozco, Rebeca Munoz, Aizik Munoz, Aiziah Munoz, Nadia Munoz and Kyle Munoz.

Vigil Service with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7:00 PM Friday, October 28 and Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 AM Saturday, October 29 both at St Dominic Catholic Church with Rev. Warren Stecklein as Celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St Dominic Catholic Church in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
