Obituary for Mary Ellen Gum

Mary Ellen Gum, age, 90 of Johnson, Kansas died Thursday, June 14, 2018 at the Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson, Kansas. She was born February 22, 1928 on a Farmstead northwest of Meade, Kansas the daughter of George and Blanche (Jennison) Wilson.

Mary Ellen grew up in Meade and Liberal until her family moved to Satanta, Kansas were she graduated from Satanta High School. She spent three years in the St. Catherine Hospital Nursing Program. Mary Ellen was homemaker, farm wife and partner with her husband, helping drive tractor, grain truck and working cattle. Mary Ellen was active in the Home Extension Unit and attended Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church in Johnson, Kansas.

She married Lewis Gum on August 27, 1948 in Ulysses, Kansas; he preceded her in death on May 18, 2012.

Survivors include two sons Lewis Ted Gum and wife Barbara of Nixa, Missouri and Jerry Allen Gum and wife Suzy of Johnson, KS. Two daughters Maxine Loraine Hines and husband Bruce of Coolidge, Kansas, Kansas and Carolyn Sue Weskamp and husband Dan of Nixa, Missouri. One brother Leon Wilson of Greensboro, North Carolina; 15 Grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Lewis Gum and two sisters Carol Grund and Hazel Cain.

Funeral service will be Thursday, June 21, 2018, 10:00 am at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church, Johnson, Kansas with Pastor Kurt Rovenstine officiating. Burial will follow at the Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson, Kansas. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 20, 2018 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson, Kansas.
