Obituary for Tommy Austin

Garden City- Tommy Lou (Johnson) Austin, 70, died on Monday, June 4, 2018 at St Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She was born on May 5, 1948 at Garden City the daughter of John Henry & Vivian Marie (King) Johnson.

Tommy graduated from Garden City High School and attended Garden City Community College. During her professional life she worked as a Kwik Shop Manager, for United Vending at Tyson (then IBP) and then worked as a Dispatcher for St Catherine Hospital for 23 years. She was very involved in her community by serving as a Past President of VFW Auxiliary, Advocate for Family Crisis, a Red Cross Volunteer, a Past President of African- American Coalition and served as a City Commissioner. She also enjoyed reading, puzzles and finding and finding new ways to help anyone in need. She was preceded in death by her Parents, Infant Son- Jason Henri Austin and two Sisters- Virginia Sue Johnson & Toni Ann Johnson.

Survivors include her Son- Aaron Lynn (and Carey) Austin of Newton, two Brothers- John Johnson, Jr. & Bobby Johnson of Garden City, Sister- Carol Taylor of Garden City and Granddaughter- Vivian Opal Austin of Newton.

Funeral Service will be at 2:30 PM Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Garden City with Rev Joel Plisek officiating. In honor of Tommy’s favorite colors you are encouraged to wear Purple or Teal colors. Memorials are suggested to Family Crisis or VFW Auxiliary in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
