Obituary for Russell Elwyn Batterton

Russell Elwyn Batterton, age 92, of Johnson, Kansas died Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at the Stanton County Hospital in Johnson, Kansas. He was born April 28, 1924, in Sylvia, Kansas, the son of David Edgar “Ed” and Vada (Book) Batterton.

Russell, a farmer and carpenter, grew up in Johnson. He was a World War II and Korean Veteran. He served his country and came home to Johnson after being honorably discharged. Russell was loved by many and a great man of integrity.

On April 29, 1986, he married Maxine (Mike) Kilgore. She passed away in September 1994. He married Monola (Nola) Thornton in November 2001. They were divorced in January 2010.

He is survived by his sister, Donice Wilkerson of Johnson, Kansas; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Russell is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maxine; seven siblings, Lloyd Batterton, Marjorie Baxter, Hazel Cleaves, George Batterton, June McKinney, Joseph Batterton, and David Batterton; and three nephews.

Graveside memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, January 9, 2017, at the Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson, Kansas with Pastor Mary Courtney officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to Stanton County Scholarship Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or donor’s choice in care of Garnand Funeral Home, PO Box 715, Johnson, Kansas 67855.
