Obituary for Amelia E. Atkinson

Amelia E. Atkinson, 93 died Monday, September 12, 2016 at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City. She was born December 29, 1922 in May, Oklahoma the daughter of George E. & Phoebe (Foster) Sunderland.
Amelia attended school in May, Oklahoma. She lived in May and Fargo, Oklahoma and has been a resident of Garden City since 1946. On April 17, 1938, she married Loren “Buster” Atkinson in May, Oklahoma. Amelia worked as a bookkeeper. She worked for 15 years at Sears, 11 years at Farmland, and 4 years for the City of Garden City where she retired in 1983. Amelia was a member of the Garden City Church of the Nazarene and the Heritage Sunday School Class. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and writing in her journal.
Survivors include 4 children Ernest E. Atkinson of Lake St. Louis, Mo., Nolan R. & wife Rhonda Atkinson of Beula, Co., Doris E. Walker of Garden City, Ks., and Orvilla & husband Jimmy Grenz of Loveland, Co.; a brother Bill Sunderland of Woodward, Ok.; a sister Joyce Barnett of Enid, Ok.; 13 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and 14 great great grandchildren. Amelia is preceded in death by her husband Loren who died on July 19, 2006. She is also preceded in death by a son Loren Leroy Atkinson; 3 brothers George Sunderland, Edward Sunderland, and Godfrey Sunderland; and 4 sisters Naomi Richardson, Maxine Jamison, Betty May Parkhurst, and Patty Denny.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at the Garden City Church of the Nazarene. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Garden City. There will be no calling hours. The family request memorials given to the Alzheimer’s Association in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
