Obituary for Frieda H. McCallion

Frieda H. McCallion, age 81, of Elkhart, Kansas died September 10, 2016 at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart, Kansas. She was born July 2, 1935 on the family farm north of Spearville, Kansas the daughter of Charles and Helen (Fox) Berend.

Frieda grew up in Spearville and graduated from Spearville High School. She married Donald Edward McCallion on November 28, 1956 in Dodge City, Kansas. Frieda worked at Tri-State Credit Union, Robertson Trucking, and the Morton County Court House. She enjoyed playing board games with her grandkids, gardening, canning, crocheting, playing bingo, gambling, and was on a bowling league in the 1970’s – 1980’s. Frieda was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Elkhart.

Survivors include her children, Sandra Stence of Red Lion, Pennsylvania, Janet Wood of Chandler, Oklahoma, Dennis McCallion of Elkhart, Kansas, and Brenda Simons of Topeka, Kansas; siblings, Jane McKenzie of Salina, Kansas, Vincent Berend of Grants, New Mexico, and Luwyna Reekie of Mulvane, Kansas; eight grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild on the way.

Frieda is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald in 2014; and siblings, Romuald Berend, Josephine Harding, Clarence Berend, Eileen Muehlbauer, and Charles Berend.

Rosary and vigil service will be held at 7:00 PM on Friday, September 16, 2016 and funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 17, 2016, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Elkhart, Kansas with Reverend Francis Khoi Nguyen officiating. Interment will follow at the Elkhart Cemetery in Elkhart. Friends may call Friday, September 16, 2016 from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Elkhart, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be given to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, or the Elkhart Senior Center in care of Garnand Funeral Home, PO Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.
