Obituary for Harold Jay DuPree

Harold Jay DuPree, age 77, of Ulysses, Kansas died Thursday, August 25, 2016 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita, Kansas. He was born September 2, 1938 in Jerome, Idaho, the son of Roy Jay and Nora Beatrice (Tucker) DuPree.

Harold attended elementary school in Cimarron and graduated from Plains High School in Plains, Kansas. Harold married “Sis” Carolyn (LaFever) on July 5, 1958. He worked for Dowell and then was a co-owner of D & G Backhoe Service and Brown-DuPree Oil Company, Incorporated both in Ulysses. He was also a co-owner of DuPree Testing Services, Incorporated in Hutchinson, Kansas. Harold served on the Ulysses City Council and as Mayor of Ulysses. He was on the Ulysses Airport Board for 35 years, some of those as chairman and on the Grant County Home Products Dinner Committee. Harold obtained his pilots license in 1961 and enjoyed flying for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Sis of their home; sons, Troy DuPree and wife Melissa, and Brad DuPree and Jenny all of Hutchinson, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Reannon DuPree of Evanston, Wyoming, Anna DuPree of Eugene, Oregon, Braden DuPree of Hutchinson, Kansas, Miranda Lewis and husband Will of Hutchinson, Kansas, Aubrie Owen of Hutchinson, Kansas, David Isaac and wife Amanda of Eudora, Kansas, Tyler Owen of Manhattan, Kansas; three great-grandchildren, Sutton and McCoy Lewis of Hutchinson, Kansas, Axel Rodriguez of Hutchinson, Kansas; and one great-grandson due October 1, 2016.

Harold is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marlene Brown; and brothers, Roy Dean DuPree and Larry Ball.

Graveside service will be Monday, August 29, 2016 at 10:30 AM at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses with Reverend Kelly Gindlesberger officiating. Friends may call on Sunday, August 28, 2016 from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Memorial contributions may be given to the Historic Adobe Museum in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
