Obituary for Philip Shorter

Philip Shorter, age 86, of Ulysses, Kansas died Sunday, June 14, 2015 at The Legacy at Park View in Ulysses, Kansas. He was born July 22, 1928 in Grant County, Kansas, the son of Charles and Selma (Ryder) Shorter.

Philip was a life-long resident of Grant County, graduating from Grant County Rural High School. He spent his life farming and raising cattle. Philip married Margene Moore on September 3, 1949 in Hugoton, Kansas. He was a member of Grant County Farm Bureau, the American Agriculture Movement and was a Boy Scout Leader. Philip enjoyed going to farm sales and auctions, and cattle auctions.

Philip is survived by his wife, Margene of their home; children, Lucinda Kay Davis and husband Dwayne of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Marvin Philip Shorter of Holyrood, Kansas, Verlin Charles Shorter and wife Dinah of Ulysses, Kansas, Vaden Gary Shorter of Ulysses, Kansas, Johanna Renee Aleck and husband Marc of Sumter, South Carolina, Janet Mae Freed and husband Robert of Delta, Colorado; two sisters, Ruth Moore of Ulysses, Kansas, and Donna Walker of Johnson, Kansas; eight grandchildren, AJ Davis, Dustin Shorter, Delayna Shorter, Jordan Shorter, Morgan Shorter, Hillary Shorter, Logan Freed, Grant Freed; five great-grandchildren, Kamryn Davis, Caleb Davis, Alexander Davis, Zoey Shorter, Isabel Shorter, and one great-grandchild on the way; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Philip is preceded in death by his parents; and grandson, Cale Dwayne Davis.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, June 19, 2015 at the Country View Baptist Church in Ulysses, Kansas with Pastor Larry Borthwick officiating. Interment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses, Kansas. Friends may call from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday, June 18, 2015 at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
