Obituary for Michael James Friesen
Michael James Friesen, 71 died Saturday, April 4, 2015 at AMG Long Term Acute Care Specialty Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. He was born August 16, 1943 in Hutchinson, Kansas the son of Leo & Pauline (Goertzen) Friesen.
Michael grew up in Hutchinson where he graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1961. Michael then earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas. He moved to Garden City in 1966. In 1972 he moved to Topeka in order to attend law school at Washburn University. In 1977 he retuned to Garden City and has lived in Garden City since. Michael worked as a probate and juvenile judge in Garden City before working as an attorney for 30 years. Michael enjoyed helping with family farming and he was instrumental in starting Wheatland Youth Services. He also previously enjoyed being active in the Presbyterian Church.
On December 28, 1965, Michael married Kathy Stormont in Hutchinson, Kansas. She survives. Other survivors include a son Matthew Friesen of Garden City; a daughter Rebecca Friesen of Newton, Kansas; a sister Kay Vivian of Indianapolis, Indiana; and 3 grandchildren. Michael is preceded in death by his parents; and a sister Bonnie Friesen.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at the Presbyterian Church in Garden City with Rev. Steve Bridwell officiating. A private family interment will take place at a later date. There will be no calling hours. The family requests memorials to the Presbyterian Church or to the Finney County Public Library both in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
