Obituary for Harvey E. Coen

Harvey E. Coen, 95 of Garden City died Saturday, August 23, 2014 at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City. He was born May 24, 1919 in Argyle, Iowa the son of Clarence G. & Emma R. (Knutson) Coen.
Harvey moved with his family to Garden City in 1921. He lived in Nashville, Kansas for 4 years while he was in high school. He returned to Garden City and has lived in Garden City since. Harvey worked as a machinist for Ladd Service in Garden City for 20 years. He then worked for another 17 ½ years at Farmland Industries also as a machinist. He retired in 1982. After his retirement, Harvey worked for 2 years at Val-Agri. He enjoyed woodworking, collecting, cutting, and polishing rocks, dancing, and working in his yard.
On February 24, 1941, he married Eleanor Knoll in Garden City. She died on June 15, 1960. Harvey later married Lydia Coerber on January 5, 1963 in Lakin, Kansas. She died on September 19, 1992. Survivors include a son James & wife Bev Coen of Wichita, Ks.; four daughters LaVaughn Roth of Holcomb, Ks., Karen & husband Jim Howard of Garden City, Ks., Marilyn & husband Don Grommesh of Wichita, Ks., and Ellen & husband Don Nulton of Wichita, Ks.; a step-daughter Berneda & husband Mickey Miller of Garden City, Ks.; 18 Grandchildren; 18 Great Grandchildren; and 6 Great Great Grandchildren. Harvey is preceded in death by his first wife Eleanor; his second wife Lydia; a step-son Bill Coerber; 2 step-daughters Leatha Carmichael and Patty Roberts; 8 brothers; 1 sister; and a grandson.
A vigil service and rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 25, 2014 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 26 also at St. Mary Catholic Church with Fr. James Baker as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family requests memorials given to St. Mary Catholic Church or to the American Heart Association both in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
