Obituary for Fred S. Borthwick

Fred S. Borthwick, age 89, of Ulysses, Kansas died Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at Park View Assisted Living in Ulysses, Kansas. He was born June 30, 1925 in Strong City, Kansas, the son of Harold and Laura (Baker) Borthwick.

Fred graduated from Chase County High School in 1943. He served during World War II and was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in 1946. Fred drove a truck from 1946 until 1962; and then moved to Ulysses to manage the Co-op Tire Shop. He married Raylene Black on May 23, 1949 in Ness City, Kansas. They had five children. Raylene died June 20, 1980. Fred retired from truck driving for Brown-DuPree Oil Company in 1992. He married Patricia Bradley on July 3, 1982 in Ulysses, Kansas. She died August 22, 2012. Fred enjoyed camping and boating, and restoring old combines. He was a member of the Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79.

Fred is survived by his sons, Larry and wife Paulette, Jerry and wife Cindy, Marvin and wife RaeLynne, Bryan and wife Carla all of Ulysses, Kansas; daughter, Nancy Borthwick of Emporia, Kansas; step-son, Kirby Bradley and wife Sue of Garden City, Kansas; step-daughters, Stacey Bradley of Grand Junction, Colorado, Kimberly Trexler and husband Brad of Hill City, Kansas, and Shelley McLeod of Longmont, Colorado; sister, Joann Borthwick of Ulysses, Kansas; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, H. Mason Borthwick.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 11, 2014 at the Patterson Avenue Church of God in Ulysses, Kansas with Pastor Larry Borthwick officiating. Interment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses, Kansas with military graveside rites conducted by Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79. Friends may call from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Patterson Avenue Church of God in Ulysses with family present. Memorial contributions may be given to the Park View Assisted Living in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
